“Red Daughter” History:

The legend behind the name “Red Daughter” is that there was once a tailor in the countryside of Shaoxing. whose wife became pregnant. He thought the child was going to be a boy and intended to have a celebration to celebrate the birth of his son. He ordered some fine rice wine to celebrate the big event. However, his wife gave birth to a daughter which spoiled his plans and he buried the wine in jars in his backyard. As time went by his daughter grew to be a beautiful smart young woman that helped with her father’s business. The business flourished, and the daughter fell in love with their best apprentice. On the wedding night the tailor suddenly remembered the wine he buried more many years earlier. He then dug out the jars and served the wine to the guests. His daughter, dressed in the traditional red dress, led to the naming the wine “Red Daughter”. After that, when daughters were born, they started burying rice wine in jars to be unearthed at the weddings of their daughters.

How to drink Red Daughter
(Yellow Wine, Chinese Rice Wine)
  • The most traditional way to drink Chinese Rice Wine(Huang Jiu or Yellow Wine) is drinking it warm. The rich flavour and the softness can be tasted when drinking warm. The typical way to warm it is to put a pot of rice wine in hot water. But don't overheat it.

  • The "western" way is to add an ice cube, which tastes fantastic.
